Biggus Makes Tunnels. Faster.
Biggus is a team founded in 2020 to deliver tunnelling research and development.
The team is also competing in the 2021 Not-a-Boring Competition hosted by Elon Musk’s Boring Company.
Technology.
Continuous Boring.
Continuous boring technique or continuous mining allows excavation of the ground and installation of tunnel lining to be carried out simultaneously.
This technology will not only increase tunnelling speed, but also reduce ground movement and impact of tunnelling.
Biggus believes in the potential of continuous boring technique in segmental lining tunnel boring machines (TBMs), pipejacking (microtunnelling, micro TBMs) and sequential excavation method (SEM, or sprayed concrete lining).
In the 2021 Not-a-Boring Competition, continuous boring in pipejacking will be utilised.
Automation.
Automation used in combination with artificial intelligence (AI), is an important technology in tunnel construction.
Automation and AI will allow optimisation of cost and programme efficiencies to take place consistently throughout a project and from one project to another.
In some areas, automation may be considered necessary to eliminate health and safety risks.
Biggus expects an increase in adoption of automation and AI in TBM and SEM. In the 2021 Not-a-Boring Competition, the use of automation and AI in a micro TBM is being considered.
